ECTROPION
Tampa Ectropion Correction:
Looking for a Board-Certified Tampa eyelid surgeon?
This condition occurs when the lower eyelid is turned outward, away from the eye. Patients with ectropion present with tearing, redness, irritation, dryness and pain as the eyelid is not in the correct anatomic position to protect the eye. Ectropion is usually caused by relaxation of the eyelid tissue secondary to aging. Other causes include scarring, trauma, skin cancers and facial nerve palsies (Ex: Bell's Palsy). Dr. Mack will perform a detailed examination to determine the cause of the ectropion, which will determine the necessary surgical intervention.
For the most common cause of ectropion, which is secondary to aging, the goal of surgery is to tighten the eyelid and its attachments. Ectropion secondary to scarring, trauma or skin cancers may require the additional utilization of skin grafts. Surgical procedures to correct ectropion secondary to facial nerve palsies may require the use of lid tightening procedures with the possible placement of gold weights in the upper eyelid to help with eyelid closure. Dr. Mack performs all of the above described procedures as outpatient surgeries. Sutures are typically removed between 5-7 days following the surgery.
